Why do some bloggers shut off comments?

I've seen some blogs that allow comments for a week and then automatically close the comment section.

Why do this? I feel like further comment engagement can keep a post alive.

I don't think it's a good practice in general to shut off comments.

If it's a spam thing, then you need to install spam controls.

What do you all think? Is this something you do with your own blog?

It seems like it might be a spam thing, though as you mentioned it would be better to have protection there than just shutting it off.

For my upcoming blog, I was planning on having comments and even encouraging discussion.

It's the best way to get your content ranked higher, to keep people on your blog and keep visiting.

Engagement is really important.

Think it's a terrible idea closing off your comments, it's a great way to interact with people and see who is reading your content. If there's spam, that can just be deleted.

I agree.
