I started with wordpress.com but never used paid service. It is expensive to run a hosted wordpress website compared to a self hosted website. Hosted wordpress also does not give you flexibility for monetization, especially for the basic version.

I'm the same.

WordPress.com seems too much like a SaaS to me and I get nervous using those.
